Perfect for custom router builds
The BPI-R4 is exactly what I needed for my home lab. The dual SFP ports work flawlessly with my fiber modules, and OpenWrt support is excellent. Setup was straightforward for someone familiar with embedded Linux.

Best value in open source routing
Coming from an older Raspberry Pi setup, the performance jump is massive. The PCIe slot allows for additional expansion, which is a game changer. Boot times are fast and the system stays cool under load.

Impressive throughput
I replaced my commercial router with this board running custom firmware. The throughput on the 2.5G SFP ports is consistent, and the Wi-Fi 6 coverage covers my entire office. Highly recommended for developers.

Good learning tool
Using this for my university networking project. It handles VLANs and complex routing tables without breaking a sweat. Only giving 4 stars because the initial image flashing process was a bit tricky for a beginner.

Robust and reliable

Great hardware, documentation needs work
Hardware performance is top-notch with the MediaTek chip handling heavy traffic easily. However, finding specific pinout diagrams for some GPIO headers took longer than expected. Still, a solid board for the price.
Q: Can I run Docker containers on this board?
A: Yes, absolutely. Since the board supports full Linux distributions like Debian and Ubuntu, you can install Docker Engine and run containers just as you would on a standard server, limited only by the 2GB RAM.
Q: What is the maximum speed supported by the SFP slots?
A: The two SFP slots support both 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps transceivers. They are compatible with most standard SFP modules available on the market, allowing for flexible fiber or DAC connections.
Q: Is there active cooling required or is passive sufficient?
A: The board comes with a large passive heatsink that is sufficient for most use cases. However, if you plan to push the CPU to 100% load continuously or operate in a hot environment, adding a small fan is recommended.
Q: Where can I find the schematic diagrams for this board?
A: As an open-source hardware project, all schematics, PCB files, and datasheets are available on the official Banana Pi wiki and our GitHub repository under the BPI-R4 section.
Q: Does this board support PoE input or output?
A: The BPI-R4 does not have native PoE input on the Ethernet ports. You will need a separate PoE splitter or injector if you plan to power it over Ethernet, though the standard 12V DC barrel jack is the recommended power method.
