Solid performance for proximity

Using this for collision avoidance in a small AGV. The update rate is sufficient for slow-moving objects. The only downside is that very dark surfaces still reduce the effective range, which is expected for ToF technology, but worth noting.

Robust in bright light

I was worried about sunlight interference, but this sensor handles high ambient light surprisingly well. Tested it near a window with direct sun, and the ranging data remained stable. The multi-zone output allows for simple gesture control logic.

Excellent for multi-zone detection

The 8x8 matrix makes a huge difference compared to single-point sensors. I used this for a smart lighting project that tracks movement across a room, and the granularity is perfect. Integration with the STM32 was straightforward using the provided API.

Best in class for this form factor

Upgraded from an older single-zone ToF sensor and the difference is night and day. The ability to define regions of interest within the 8x8 grid allows for very specific trigger events. Documentation could be slightly better, but community examples help.

Compact and powerful

Tiny footprint but packs a punch. The I2C interface is easy to wire up on a breadboard. Being able to get depth data for 64 distinct zones opens up so many possibilities for interactive installations without needing a full camera system.

Great FOV, needs calibration

The 90-degree field of view is impressive and covers my robot's front arc nicely. However, you do need to spend time calibrating the thresholds for different surface colors to get accurate distance readings. Once tuned, it works very well.

Q: What is the power consumption in continuous operation mode?

A: In continuous ranging mode, the typical power consumption is approximately 20mW to 30mW depending on the configuration and ambient light conditions. It also supports low-power sleep modes to significantly reduce consumption when active ranging is not needed.

Q: Does this module come with a breakout board or is it just the raw LGA module?

A: This listing is for the raw VL53L7CX LGA module only. You will need to design your own PCB footprint or purchase a separate evaluation board/starter kit if you require a breakout interface for prototyping.

Q: Is there a Python library available for Raspberry Pi integration?

A: Yes, STMicroelectronics provides a software development kit (SDK) that includes C drivers. There are several community-maintained Python wrappers available on GitHub that interface with the C driver to allow easy use on Raspberry Pi and other SBCs.
