Solid performance for the cost

We stock these for our community makerspace. They are robust enough for beginners to experiment with and accurate enough for advanced prototypes. The only downside is the pin header isn't always soldered.

Reliable motion detector

I use this to trigger a camera trap in my garden. It has survived rain (inside a protective case) and temperature fluctuations without any false triggers. Highly recommended.

Good sensitivity, needs calibration

Works well for my hallway light automation. Initially, it was a bit too sensitive to heat changes from the sun, but after tweaking the delay and sensitivity knobs, it performs reliably.

Exceeded expectations

The range is actually better than advertised in my testing. I get a solid 8 meters in a clear hallway. The L/H trigger mode selection is a very useful feature for different applications.

5 FAQ

Q: How do I increase the detection distance?

A: You can adjust the 'Distance' potentiometer on the board clockwise to increase sensitivity and range. Note that environmental factors like temperature also affect range.

Q: Is this compatible with 5V Raspberry Pi GPIO?

A: Yes, the output high level is 3.3V which is safe for Raspberry Pi GPIO pins. However, ensure you power the module with at least 5V for stable operation.

Q: Does this come with connecting wires?

A: No, the module typically comes without pre-attached wires. You will need to solder your own connector wires to the VCC, OUT, and GND pins.

Q: What is the difference between L and H trigger modes?

A: In L mode (repeatable), the output stays high as long as motion is detected. In H mode (non-repeatable), the output goes high upon detection and stays high for the set delay time regardless of continued motion.

Q: Can this sensor detect motion through glass?

A: No, PIR sensors cannot detect infrared radiation through glass. The lens must have a direct line of sight to the moving object.
