Works well but needs careful handling
The connector pins are quite delicate; I bent one slightly during installation. Once connected properly, the image stream is stable. Just be very careful when plugging it into your board.

Good value for prototyping
Great hardware for the price. Image quality is sharp in good lighting conditions. Low light performance is average, which is expected for this sensor size. Arrived well-packaged and ready to plug into my development kit.

Perfect for FPGA stereo vision projects
Integrated this module with my Xilinx Zynq board without issues. The synchronization between the two lenses is excellent, which is critical for my depth estimation algorithm. Documentation could be slightly better, but the pinout is standard.

Solid choice for university projects
Used this for my final year computer vision thesis. The dual-camera setup saved me from having to build a rig myself. Setup took about an hour to get the timing constraints right on the FPGA.

Reliable binocular setup
I've tested several camera modules, and this OV5640 pair offers the best stability for industrial control testing. The DVP interface makes it easy to capture raw data directly on the FPGA fabric.
Q: Can I change the field of view by swapping lenses?
A: The lenses are fixed and calibrated specifically for the stereo pairing. Swapping them is not recommended as it will break the stereo alignment and require complex recalibration.
Q: What is the maximum cable length supported for the connector?
A: For reliable high-speed DVP signal transmission at 1080p30, we recommend keeping the extension cable under 15cm. Longer distances may require signal buffering or differential conversion.
Q: Does this come with example Verilog code?
A: The package includes a link to a GitHub repository containing basic Verilog HDL examples for capturing YUV422 data on common FPGA platforms like Xilinx and Intel.
Q: Is this compatible with Altera Cyclone IV boards?
A: Yes, as long as your Cyclone IV board has a DVP interface and you can configure the GPIO pins for the 20-pin header, it will work. You may need to adapt the pin mapping in your Quartus project.
Q: What is the baseline distance between the two lenses?
A: The fixed baseline distance between the optical centers of the two OV5640 sensors is approximately 65mm, which is suitable for medium-range depth perception.
