Great hardware, documentation could be better
The hardware quality is excellent for the price. The RISC-V core implementation is fascinating to explore. However, some of the advanced documentation is a bit sparse, so be prepared to dig into forums for complex projects.

Perfect entry point for FPGA learning
This board is incredibly affordable yet powerful enough for serious learning. The HDMI output works flawlessly with the provided examples, and setting up the Gowin IDE was straightforward. Highly recommended for students.

Unbeatable value proposition
You simply cannot find another FPGA board with HDMI and this much logic at this price point. It arrived quickly and was well-packaged. The USB-C programming feature is very convenient.

Amazing for retro gaming consoles
I successfully ported a simple GameBoy core to this board. The logic capacity is sufficient for many 8-bit and early 16-bit systems. The HDMI latency is negligible, making it great for real-time video applications.

Solid board for Verilog practice
Used this for a university project involving digital signal processing. The performance is stable, and the pinout is clearly labeled on the silkscreen. Lost one star because the voltage regulator gets slightly warm under heavy load.

Community support is fantastic
While the official docs are okay, the community around Sipeed is amazing. I found dozens of open-source projects specifically for the Tang Nano 9K that helped me get started immediately. A must-buy for makers.
Q: What is the maximum resolution supported over HDMI?
A: The board can comfortably handle 720p at 60Hz. With optimized timing constraints, some users have achieved 1080p at lower refresh rates, but 720p is the guaranteed stable resolution.
Q: Is the Gowin IDE free to use for this chip?
A: Yes, Gowin provides a free version of their FPGA design software (Edu/Standard) which fully supports the GW1NR-9 chip used on this board.
Q: Can I power this board via the GPIO pins instead of USB?
A: It is strongly recommended to power the board via the USB-C port. Supplying power directly to GPIO pins can damage the FPGA if voltage levels are not regulated precisely to 3.3V.
Q: Does this board come with a USB cable included?
A: Yes, the package typically includes a USB Type-C to Type-A cable for power and programming.
