Impressed by the dual architecture support
The ability to experiment with both ARM and 51 architectures on one board form factor is a unique selling point. Great for educational workshops where we compare different MCU families.

Stable and fast
Used this to control a DC motor driver in a robotics project. The PWM output is clean, and the ADC readings are consistent. No overheating issues even after running continuously for 48 hours.

Good alternative, minor toolchain tweaks needed
The hardware is fantastic. However, if you are using older versions of some IDEs, you might need to update the device pack to recognize the GD32 specifically, though STM32 targets usually work fine.

Perfect drop-in replacement

Excellent for learning ARM Cortex-M3

Great value for industrial prototyping
Solid build quality and reliable performance at 72MHz. We used these for a batch of sensor nodes. Only giving 4 stars because the documentation could be slightly more detailed regarding the 51 mode switch.
Q: How do I switch between STM32 compatibility mode and 51 Microcontroller mode?
A: The board primarily operates as a GD32 (ARM Cortex-M3). The '51 support' refers to firmware libraries and architectural compatibility for migration; there is no physical switch required for standard operation.
Q: What is the maximum current draw per GPIO pin?
A: Each GPIO pin can source or sink up to 25mA, with a total limit for the port and chip that should be respected to ensure stability.
Q: Can I use the standard ST-Link V2 programmer with this board?
A: Yes, the GenBotter GD32 board is fully compatible with standard ST-Link V2 and V3 programmers via the SWD interface.
Q: Does this board come with a bootloader pre-installed?
A: Yes, it comes with a standard UART bootloader that allows you to upload code without an external programmer, similar to the Blue Pill boards.
Q: Is the 3.3V regulator capable of powering external sensors?
A: The onboard LDO can provide a reasonable amount of current for low-power sensors, but for high-current peripherals, we recommend using an external 3.3V supply connected to the 3.3V pin.
