Best beginner paper I've tried
I have tried several brands, and Wan Xiang is consistently reliable. The thickened feature really prevents frustration when using wetter brushes.

Perfect for my first calligraphy class
I bought this for my weekend brush practice course. The grids are very clear and help me keep my characters aligned. The paper is thick enough that the ink doesn't bleed through to the next page.

Great for daily training
I go through a lot of paper practicing basic strokes. This pack lasts a while, and the consistency between sheets is impressive. Highly recommend for students.

Good quality for the price
As a beginner, I needed something affordable but functional. This Mao Bian paper strikes a good balance. It handles water-based ink well without tearing easily.

Nice texture
The surface feels smooth but has just enough tooth to grip the brush. The rice grids are printed lightly so they don't distract from the final look of the practice work.

Excellent ink control
The semi-processed nature of this paper makes it forgiving for beginners. You can see the ink spread slightly, which helps in understanding brush pressure, but it stays within the grid lines nicely.
Q: Is this paper suitable for sumi-e painting as well?
A: While primarily designed for calligraphy practice, the semi-processed Mao Bian material can handle light sumi-e exercises. However, for professional painting, we recommend our dedicated Xuan painting series.
Q: Does the ink bleed through to the other side?
A: Due to the thickened design, minimal bleeding occurs with standard practice ink. We still recommend placing a blotter sheet underneath if you use very wet ink.
Q: What size are the grids on the paper?
A: The rice grids are standard 3cm x 3cm squares, which is the ideal size for practicing regular script (Kaishu) and running script (Xingshu).
Q: Can I use this with a fountain pen for hard pen calligraphy?
A: Yes, the smooth surface works well for hard pen calligraphy too, though the grids are specifically optimized for brush stroke width and spacing.
Q: How many sheets come in one package?
A: Each package contains exactly 50 sheets of high-quality practice paper.
