Great value, minor setup needed
Works well once you get the voltage regulator sorted. Make sure your microcontroller supports 3.3V logic. The range is consistent up to about 1.8 meters on a white wall, which matches the specs.

Consistent performance in low light
Unlike optical sensors, this ToF module works perfectly in complete darkness. We integrated several into a prototype conveyor system for package counting, and they haven't failed yet.

Perfect for robotics projects
This sensor is incredibly accurate for short-range detection. I used it on my line-following robot to detect obstacles, and the response time is fantastic. The I2C library for Arduino worked out of the box.

Range varies by surface color
Just a reminder that like all ToF sensors, dark surfaces reduce the effective range significantly. On black foam, I only got about 60cm. On white paper, it hit the full 2m. Not a defect, just physics.

Compact and reliable
The small form factor makes this ideal for drone altitude hold systems. It's much better than ultrasonic sensors for precision. No issues with the purple board version I received.

Good documentation support
As a beginner, I found plenty of tutorials online for this specific chip. The only reason for 4 stars is that the pins are slightly close together, making soldering a bit tricky without a magnifier.
Q: What is the refresh rate of the distance measurements?
A: The VL53L0X-V2 can typically provide measurements at rates up to 50Hz, depending on the timing budget configuration you set in your code.
Q: Can multiple sensors be used on the same I2C bus?
A: Yes, but since they share the same default I2C address, you need to sequence their initialization using the XSHUT pin to assign unique addresses to each sensor before normal operation.
Q: Is this sensor safe for human eyes?
A: Yes, the 940nm VCSEL laser is Class 1 certified, meaning it is eye-safe under all conditions of normal use.
Q: Does the color of the board (Black/Purple/Blue) affect performance?
A: No, the PCB color is purely aesthetic or indicates different batch manufacturers. The core VL53L0X-V2 chip and performance specifications remain identical across all color variants.
Q: Is this sensor compatible with 5V Arduino Uno boards?
A: Yes, but you must use a logic level converter or a breakout board with a built-in regulator, as the sensor operates at 2.6V-3.5V. Direct connection to 5V pins may damage the module.
