Running Buildroot was seamless
I managed to get a custom Buildroot Linux image running within a weekend. The performance for a soft-core CPU is impressive. Great for understanding computer architecture from the ground up.

Great for emulation, slight learning curve
Running Linux on this tiny board is a blast. I successfully ported a GameBoy emulator. The only downside is setting up the toolchain initially took some time if you are used to Xilinx or Intel ecosystems.

Best budget FPGA board available
As a university student, this was the most affordable way to learn hardware description languages. It handles VGA and HDMI easily. Just wish it came with a case, as the pins are a bit exposed.

Compact and powerful
The form factor is excellent for portable projects. The 20K logic elements are sufficient for most soft-core processor implementations. USB-C power delivery is convenient. Highly recommended for industrial prototyping too.

Good hardware, software tools need work
The board itself is solid and well-built. However, the Gowin IDE can be a bit buggy on Linux hosts. Once you get past the setup hurdles, the hardware performance is fantastic for the price point.

Incredible value for FPGA learning
This board is perfect for getting started with Gowin FPGAs. The HDMI output works flawlessly for retro gaming projects, and the RISC-V core implementation is surprisingly fast. Documentation could be better, but the community support makes up for it.
Q: Which software toolchain is required for development?
A: You will need the Gowin EDA software suite. It is free to download from the Gowin Semiconductor website. We also support open-source flows like Yosys and nextpnr for advanced users.
Q: Is the USB-C port capable of data transfer or just power?
A: The USB-C port supports both power delivery and data transfer. It can be used for programming the FPGA via the built-in programmer and for serial communication.
Q: Does this board come with a pre-installed operating system?
A: No, the board comes blank. You need to flash the FPGA bitstream and load the OS image onto a MicroSD card yourself. We provide example images on our GitHub repository.
Q: Can I use standard Arduino shields with this board?
A: Not directly. While it has GPIO pins, the pinout and voltage levels differ from standard Arduino boards. You would need a custom shield or a breakout board to interface safely.
Q: What is the maximum resolution supported via HDMI?
A: The Tang Nano 20K supports HDMI output up to 1080p at 60Hz, depending on the specific core implementation and timing constraints you define in your project.
