Good board but not for beginners
The board itself seems powerful, but I struggled to find beginner-friendly tutorials specifically for the Xinghu version of the RV1106. Ended up relying on generic Rockchip docs. Works well once you figure it out.

Solid for prototyping industrial controllers
We are evaluating this for a smart sensor node. The real-time Linux capability is a huge plus. Only giving 4 stars because the carrier board needs to be purchased separately for full I/O access.

Excellent value for edge AI projects
The RV1106 core board is incredibly efficient for computer vision tasks. The 1 TOPS NPU handles object detection smoothly without overheating. Documentation could be slightly better, but the community support fills the gaps.

Best in class for under $20
Unbeatable compute density. Running YOLOv5-tiny at decent FPS is easy on this chip. The thermal management is good even without a fan in moderate workloads.

Perfect for small robotics
I used this for a line-following robot with camera guidance. The low power consumption allows it to run off a small battery pack for hours. The MIPI camera interface works flawlessly with standard sensors.

Great hardware, steep learning curve
Hardware quality is top-notch and the pinout is well labeled. Getting the custom Linux build running took some time if you aren't familiar with Buildroot. Once set up, performance is stellar for the price point.
Q: Can I power this directly from a Raspberry Pi GPIO?
A: It is not recommended. The Core1106 requires a stable 5V/2A supply. While the logic levels are compatible, the Pi's GPIO cannot provide sufficient current for the board and attached peripherals reliably.
Q: Does the NPU support TensorFlow Lite models?
A: The NPU uses the Rockchip RKNN toolkit. You can convert TensorFlow Lite, PyTorch, or Caffe models to the RKNN format for deployment on this hardware.
Q: Is there a carrier board available for this core module?
A: Yes, we offer a dedicated evaluation carrier board that breaks out all interfaces including HDMI, Ethernet, and multiple camera ports. It is sold separately on our store page.
Q: What is the maximum resolution supported by the MIPI CSI interface?
A: The RV1106 supports up to 8MP (3264x2448) at 30fps or 4MP at 60fps depending on the specific sensor module used and bandwidth configuration.
Q: Does this board come with a pre-installed OS?
A: No, the core board is shipped without an OS. You need to flash the firmware image (Buildroot or RT-Linux) provided in the wiki documentation onto the storage medium yourself.
