Reliable for industrial prototyping
We used several of these for a control panel prototype. The interrupt features work reliably, and the ability to set different addresses allows us to chain multiple modules without conflict.

Stable performance under load
Running 12 inputs and 4 outputs simultaneously with no lag or dropped signals. The MCP23017 chip handles the traffic well, and the Waveshare implementation is robust.

Great value, clear documentation
Solid build quality and the wiki documentation is very detailed. I deducted one star only because the jumper caps were a bit tight, but otherwise, it's an excellent expansion board for STM32 projects.

Perfect for expanding GPIO on Raspberry Pi
This module works flawlessly with my Raspberry Pi 4. The I2C setup was straightforward using the provided Python library, and having 16 extra pins solved my project bottleneck immediately.

Easy to use for beginners
As someone new to I2C communication, this board made learning easy. The examples for Arduino worked out of the box, and the pin labeling on the PCB is very clear.

Compact and functional
Fits perfectly in my robot chassis. The voltage selection jumper is a nice touch for switching between 3.3V and 5V logic levels depending on the sensor array being used.
Q: What is the maximum current each pin can source or sink?
A: Each I/O pin can typically source or sink up to 25mA, but we recommend keeping loads under 20mA per pin for optimal longevity and stability. For higher current devices, please use external transistors or relays.
Q: Is a separate library required for Micro:bit?
A: Yes, you will need to import a specific MCP23017 extension or write a custom driver using the I2C blocks available in the MakeCode editor. We provide example code on our product wiki.
Q: Does this support interrupt handling for button presses?
A: Absolutely. The module features two interrupt output pins (INTA and INTB) that can be configured to trigger when input states change, reducing the need for constant polling.
Q: Can this module be used with a 5V Arduino Uno?
A: Yes, the module supports both 3.3V and 5V logic levels. You can select the operating voltage using the onboard jumper header.
Q: How many of these modules can I connect to a single I2C bus?
A: You can connect up to 8 modules on a single I2C bus by configuring the address jumpers (A0, A1, A2) to unique combinations for each board.
