Surprisingly easy to start with
I was intimidated by FPGAs before, but the pre-loaded examples on this board made it very approachable. The blink LED tutorial worked immediately after installing the drivers.

Good value, minor documentation gaps
For the price, you cannot beat the specs. Some example projects in the GitHub repo were slightly outdated, but the community forums helped me get everything running quickly.

Solid hardware, steep learning curve
The hardware quality is top-notch with good pinout labeling. However, if you are new to Gowin tools, expect a bit of a learning curve compared to Xilinx or Intel ecosystems. Still highly recommended.

Perfect for PMOD projects
I love the dual PMOD headers. I connected a display and a sensor module easily. The SDRAM integration makes it suitable for more complex soft-core projects than typical beginner boards.

Great for university projects

Excellent entry point for Gowin FPGAs
This board is fantastic for learning RISC-V on FPGA. The documentation is clear, and the USB-C programming works flawlessly on Linux and Windows. Great value for the price.
Q: Is the Gowin IDE free to use for this device?
A: Yes, Gowin provides a free version of their EDA software (Gowin EDA) which fully supports the GW5A series used on this board.
Q: What voltage levels do the PMOD headers operate at?
A: The PMOD headers on the Tang Primer 25K operate at 3.3V logic levels. Please ensure your peripheral modules are compatible or use level shifters.
Q: Can I run Linux on the RISC-V core on this board?
A: While the board supports RISC-V soft cores, the available logic resources and SDRAM capacity are generally suited for bare-metal applications or RTOS, not full-scale Linux distributions.
Q: Is there a JTAG header available for external debuggers?
A: The board primarily uses the built-in USB-to-JTAG programmer via the Type-C port. There are test points available for advanced debugging, but no standard 20-pin JTAG connector is populated.
