Solid board, minor heating under load
Overall excellent performance for WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. I noticed it gets slightly warm when driving the Wi-Fi at max power continuously, but nothing concerning. The 16MB flash is plenty for storing firmware and assets.

Great upgrade from ESP32
Switched from the original ESP32 for a new project requiring better USB capabilities. The S3 handles native USB mouse/keyboard emulation flawlessly. Pinout is clearly labeled on the board which saves time during prototyping.

Perfect for AI and Voice Projects
The N16R8 configuration is a game changer. Having 8MB of PSRAM allows me to run complex audio processing and small ML models without running out of memory. The USB OTG support is also a huge plus for connecting peripherals directly.

Best value for learning embedded AI
As a student, this board offers incredible value. The community support for ESP-IDF and Arduino IDE is massive. I was able to get a voice recognition demo running in just a few hours thanks to the extra RAM.

Reliable for industrial prototypes
Used this for a factory monitoring prototype. The stability of the connection and the sheer number of GPIOs available made integration with various sensors very straightforward. Highly recommended for professional use.

Good but requires 5V supply care
The board works great for my smart home hub. Just be careful with the power supply; while it says 5V input, using a high-quality cable is necessary to avoid brownouts when Wi-Fi transmits. Once sorted, it runs 24/7 without issues.
Q: Can I power this board with a 3.7V LiPo battery directly?
A: No, you should not connect a LiPo battery directly to the 5V or 3.3V pins. This board does not have a built-in charging circuit. Please use an external TP4056 module or a dedicated power management shield to regulate the battery voltage before connecting.
Q: Does this board support MicroPython out of the box?
A: The board comes with no firmware pre-installed, but it is fully compatible with MicroPython. You can easily flash the latest MicroPython binary using esptool.py or the web installer.
Q: Is the USB port capable of acting as a device (slave) or only host?
A: The ESP32-S3 features a full-speed USB OTG controller. It can operate as both a Device (e.g., appearing as a keyboard, mouse, or MIDI controller to a PC) and a Host (to connect external USB drives or keyboards), depending on your code implementation.
Q: What is the difference between N16R8 and N8R2 versions?
A: N16R8 indicates 16MB of Flash storage and 8MB of PSRAM. The N8R2 version would have 8MB Flash and 2MB PSRAM. The N16R8 is better suited for applications requiring large buffers, such as audio processing, camera interfaces, or complex graphical displays.
Q: Does this kit include an antenna?
A: Yes, the DevKitC-1 comes with a printed PCB onboard antenna. There is also a U.FL connector footprint if you wish to solder an external antenna connector for better range in enclosed metal projects, but the antenna itself is not included in the standard box.
