Good sensor, needs calibration time
The build quality is solid and the pinout is clear. Just remember that it needs a few days of continuous operation to fully calibrate the baseline for eCO2. Once calibrated, the data is very consistent.

Reliable and compact
Small footprint makes it easy to fit into custom enclosures. The formaldehyde detection feature is a nice bonus for checking new furniture. Highly recommended for DIY air purifiers.

Great value for the price
Compared to other NDIR sensors, this is much more affordable for student projects. While it estimates CO2 rather than measuring it directly like NDIR, the accuracy is sufficient for general trends and alerts.

Excellent for plant monitoring
I use this to monitor CO2 levels in my small greenhouse setup. It helps me decide when to ventilate. The TVOC reading also helps detect any harmful off-gassing from new pots or soils.
Q: Is a library available for Arduino IDE?
A: Yes, there are several open-source libraries available for the Arduino IDE, such as 'Adafruit SGP30' or 'SparkFun SGP30', which make reading data very simple.
Q: What is the expected lifespan of the sensor element?
A: Under normal operating conditions, the SGP30 sensor element has an expected lifetime of more than 10 years. Avoid exposing it to high concentrations of silicones or solvents to maintain longevity.
Q: How long does the sensor need to warm up before giving valid data?
A: The sensor typically requires about 15 seconds after power-on to provide initial readings. However, for the most accurate baseline calibration, it is recommended to run the sensor continuously for at least 7 days.
Q: Does this sensor measure actual CO2 or just estimate it?
A: The SGP30 calculates equivalent CO2 (eCO2) based on VOC and hydrogen measurements using an internal algorithm. It is not a direct NDIR CO2 sensor, but it provides highly accurate trends for indoor air quality monitoring.
