Perfect for my home safety project

Good value but needs patience
The module works exactly as described. Just remember that it needs at least 24 hours of preheating before you get accurate readings. Once warmed up, it detects propane leaks instantly. Deducting one star only because the documentation could be better.

Reliable detection

Solid performer
We use these in our workshop for educational kits. They are robust enough to handle beginner mistakes and provide consistent data. Make sure to provide a clean 5V power supply to avoid noise in the analog reading.
Q: How do I calibrate the sensitivity threshold?
A: There is a blue potentiometer on the back of the module. Power the sensor in a clean air environment, then turn the screw until the digital indicator LED just turns off. This sets your baseline threshold.
Q: Does this module require an external library to work with Arduino?
A: No external library is strictly necessary. You can read the digital output using a standard digitalRead() function and the analog output using analogRead(). However, many users find community libraries helpful for calibration.
Q: Is the output voltage compatible with 3.3V logic boards?
A: The sensor heating element requires 5V. The digital output is TTL level which is generally 5V. If connecting to a 3.3V board like some Raspberry Pi GPIOs, please use a logic level converter to prevent damage.
Q: Can this detect carbon monoxide as well?
A: The MQ-5 is specifically optimized for Liquefied Gas, Natural Gas, and City Gas. For Carbon Monoxide detection, we recommend looking at our MQ-7 or MQ-9 sensor modules which are tuned for that specific gas.
Q: What is the exact preheat time required before the sensor is accurate?
A: For best results, we recommend a preheat time of 24 to 48 hours. While it may show readings sooner, the baseline stabilizes significantly after a full day of continuous power.
