Reliable for occupancy counting
We are testing these for a small meeting room counter. The ability to distinguish between static presence and motion is a game changer. The data output is consistent and easy to integrate into our MQTT bridge.

Good value but requires 3.3V logic
Works great, but remember this is a 3.3V device. I accidentally connected it to 5V initially and had to be careful. Make sure your microcontroller logic levels match or use a converter. Performance is solid after fixing that.

Perfect replacement for PIR
Finally, a sensor that knows when someone is actually sitting still in the room. I used this to control my office lights, and they no longer turn off while I'm reading. The documentation provided by Hi-Link was helpful.

Excellent sensitivity for smart home projects
This LD2412 module works flawlessly with my ESP32 setup. It detects even slight movements like typing on a keyboard, which older PIR sensors missed completely. The UART communication is straightforward to parse.

Compact and powerful
Small form factor makes it easy to hide behind diffusers or in junction boxes. The 24GHz frequency penetrates thin plastic covers without issues. Highly recommended for commercial presence detection prototypes.

Great range, needs calibration
The detection range is impressive up to 6 meters in my hallway. However, you need to spend time tuning the sensitivity gates via the serial command to avoid false positives from ceiling fans. Once configured, it's very reliable.
Q: Can this sensor detect people through a thin wooden door?
A: While millimeter wave radar can penetrate some non-metallic materials, detection through wood depends heavily on thickness and density. For the LD2412, we recommend line-of-sight installation or mounting behind thin plastic covers for optimal performance. Thick wood may significantly attenuate the signal.
Q: Is there a Python library available to parse the UART output?
A: Hi-Link does not provide an official Python library, but the protocol is well-documented in the datasheet. Many users have created open-source parsers available on GitHub for ESPHome and Home Assistant which work perfectly with this module.
Q: What is the maximum number of targets this sensor can track simultaneously?
A: The LD2412 is primarily designed for presence detection rather than multi-target tracking. It reliably detects the presence of one or more humans within the zone but does not provide distinct coordinates for multiple separate individuals like higher-end imaging radars.
Q: Does this module come with an antenna included?
A: Yes, the LD2412 module comes with integrated PCB antennas. You do not need to purchase or solder external antennas for standard operation. Just ensure there is no metal obstruction directly in front of the antenna area.
Q: How do I reset the configuration if I mess up the sensitivity settings?
A: You can restore factory defaults by sending the specific 'restore default' command via the UART interface as detailed in section 4.2 of the user manual. Alternatively, cycling the power while holding the configuration pin (if accessible on your specific breakout) may also reset it.
