Solid performance, minor noise
Overall a great module. I noticed a tiny bit of noise in the magnetometer readings when near high-current ESCs, but that is expected. With proper filtering in the code, it works perfectly for stabilization.

Excellent integration with Raspberry Pi
I used this for a self-balancing robot project using a Raspberry Pi. The I2C communication was easy to set up using Python libraries. The fusion of the 9-axis data gives very smooth orientation estimates.

Perfect for my DIY Quadcopter
This sensor module works flawlessly with my Arduino flight controller setup. The data from the gyroscope and accelerometer is stable, and the magnetometer calibration was straightforward. Great value for the price.

Best budget IMU available
Compared to other modules in this price range, the GY-85 offers the best combination of accuracy and ease of use. The breakout board layout is logical, making soldering headers very simple.

Good sensor, needs careful wiring
The module itself is excellent and provides accurate readings. However, be very careful with the voltage levels if you are using a 5V logic board without a level shifter. Once wired correctly, it performed exactly as expected.
Q: Can this be used underwater for an ROV project?
A: The PCB itself is not waterproof. You must house the module in a waterproof enclosure if you intend to use it for underwater robotics. The sensors will function correctly inside a sealed housing.
Q: Is this module compatible with 5V Arduino Uno boards directly?
A: While the module can accept 5V input power, the I2C logic lines are 3.3V. It is highly recommended to use a logic level converter when connecting to a 5V Arduino to prevent potential damage to the sensor chip.
Q: How do I calibrate the magnetometer?
A: Calibration typically involves rotating the sensor in all directions while running a calibration sketch. Many example codes for the HMC5883L include a routine to calculate offset values which you then apply in your main code.
Q: Does this come with pre-soldered headers?
A: No, the module is shipped without headers soldered to allow for flexible mounting options. You will need to solder your own pin headers or connect via wires.
Q: What library do you recommend for reading data on ESP32?
A: For ESP32, the 'Adafruit MPU6050' and 'Adafruit HMC5883' libraries work very well together. There are also combined IMU libraries available on GitHub specifically for the GY-85.
