Great range adjustment

The 10-80cm range claim is accurate. I tested it against various objects, and it detects black and white surfaces equally well once calibrated. The NPN output is standard and easy to interface with microcontrollers.

Easy to use for beginners

As someone new to electronics, I was worried about compatibility. This sensor made it very simple. Just connect VCC, GND, and Signal, then tweak the screw until the light triggers at the right distance. Works great!

Perfect for my Arduino robot project

This sensor works exactly as described. The detection range is easily adjustable with the potentiometer on the back. I set it to about 30cm for my line-following robot, and it avoids obstacles smoothly. Great value for the price.

Good sensor, instructions could be better

The hardware quality is solid and the response time is very fast. However, the wiring diagram on the package was a bit faint. Once I found a pinout guide online, it worked perfectly with my Raspberry Pi setup.

Solid industrial feel

Using this on a small conveyor belt sorter. It handles the vibration well and hasn't given any false positives. The only reason for 4 stars is that the cable could be slightly longer for my specific enclosure setup.

Reliable and consistent

I bought five of these for a classroom project. All of them functioned immediately out of the box. The ability to adjust the sensitivity makes it versatile for different lighting conditions. Highly recommended for students.

5 FAQ

Q: How do I adjust the detection distance?

A: There is a small blue potentiometer (trimmer) on the back of the sensor module. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to turn it clockwise to increase the range or counter-clockwise to decrease it. Test with an object while adjusting.

Q: Does sunlight affect the performance?

A: Strong direct sunlight contains infrared radiation which can interfere with the sensor. For outdoor use, we recommend shielding the sensor from direct sun or using a physical tube to narrow the field of view and block ambient light.

Q: What is the maximum current this sensor can switch directly?

A: The maximum load current is 300mA. While it can technically drive small relays or LEDs directly, we recommend using it to signal a microcontroller or a transistor/MOSFET driver for higher power loads to ensure longevity and stability.

Q: Can this sensor detect clear glass or transparent objects?

A: Infrared sensors like the E18-D80NK may struggle with completely transparent objects like clear glass because IR light passes through them. It works best on opaque surfaces. For glass, you might need to apply a small mark or use a different sensor type.

Q: Is the output signal 5V compatible?

A: Yes, the sensor operates on DC 5V-35V. The output is an open-collector NPN transistor. When an object is detected, it pulls the signal line to ground (LOW). You will need a pull-up resistor to your logic voltage (e.g., 5V or 3.3V) to read the high state.
