Great variety of subjects
I appreciate the mix of flowers, birds, and landscapes. It keeps practice sessions interesting. The only reason for 4 stars is that I wish there were more figure studies included.

High-quality paper
The Zhejiang Xuan paper feels authentic. It handles ink washes well when I decide to add color after tracing the lines. A solid product for serious practice.

Good value for money
The collection offers a lot of pages for the price. The bird illustrations are my favorite. Some landscape lines are very fine, so you need a good quality brush to match.

Perfect for learning Gongbi techniques
The line drawings are incredibly precise, making it easy to trace and understand the flow of traditional Chinese painting. The Xuan paper quality is excellent for practicing brush control without bleeding too much.

Ideal starter kit
As a complete beginner, this kit gave me the confidence to start. The lines are clear enough to follow but challenging enough to improve my hand stability. Highly recommended for adults starting their journey.

Excellent for daily practice
I use these drafts every morning for warm-up exercises. The consistency in line weight helps me focus on my own brush pressure. Liupintang has done a great job with this series.
Q: Is this kit suitable for someone who has never held a Chinese brush before?
A: Yes, this kit is specifically designed for beginners. The clear line drawings guide your hand, helping you develop basic brush control and confidence before moving to freehand painting.
Q: How many different designs are included in the starter kit?
A: The kit features a diverse selection covering four main categories: flowers, birds, landscapes, and figures, providing ample variety for extended practice sessions.
Q: Can I use watercolor paints on this Xuan paper after tracing?
A: Absolutely. The premium Xuan paper used in this kit is designed to handle traditional Chinese pigments and light watercolor washes typical of the Gongbi style.
Q: Are the lines printed in ink that might smudge when wet?
A: No, the lines are printed with high-quality, fade-resistant ink that remains stable even when light washes or moisture are applied during the painting process.
Q: Do I need to buy special brushes for this kit?
A: While any fine-tip brush works, we recommend using traditional Chinese Gongbi brushes (such as wolf hair or mixed hair) to get the best results and authentic experience with these drafts.
