Great value, minor documentation gaps
Hardware quality is excellent and the build feels solid. The serial communication is fast. I deducted one star because the ROS2 driver setup required some trial and error not covered in the manual.

Reliable TOF sensor
Been running this for 48 hours straight in a mapping application without a single dropout. The accuracy at close range is impressive compared to other sensors in this price bracket.

Perfect for my autonomous rover project
The integration with ROS2 was seamless. The point cloud data is stable and the 18m range is more than enough for indoor navigation. Highly recommended for hobbyists and prototyping.

Compact and lightweight

Exceeded expectations

Good for educational purposes
We bought five units for our robotics course. Students found them easy to interface with. One unit had a slightly wobbly motor housing, but it didn't affect performance.
Q: What is the operating temperature range for outdoor use?
A: The SDM18 is rated for operation between -10°C and 50°C. For extreme outdoor conditions, we recommend adding a simple weatherproof housing.
Q: Is there a pre-built Docker container available for ROS2 Humble?
A: Absolutely. You can find the official Docker image link and usage instructions in the 'Software Resources' section of our product wiki page.
Q: Does this sensor come with a USB-to-TTL converter cable?
A: Yes, the package includes a standard USB-to-TTL serial cable for easy connection to your PC for testing and configuration.
Q: Does it support dynamic obstacle detection?
A: Yes, the high sampling frequency allows the sensor to detect moving objects effectively. However, processing logic for dynamic tracking must be implemented in your host application or ROS node.
Q: Can the rotation speed be fixed at exactly 5Hz?
A: Yes, the rotation speed is fully adjustable via serial commands. You can set it to any integer value between 2Hz and 10Hz, including 5Hz.
