Perfect for bathroom occupancy detection
Unlike PIR sensors that turn off the light if you don't move, this millimeter wave radar keeps the light on as long as someone is in the room. Installation was straightforward, and the range adjustment via software is a nice touch.

Solid performance for the price
Works well for detecting human presence up to about 8 meters in my testing environment. Beyond that, it gets a bit spotty, but for most indoor rooms, it is more than sufficient. Power consumption is low as advertised.

Best upgrade from standard PIR

Excellent sensitivity for smart home projects
I integrated this RD102 module into my home automation system to control lights based on presence rather than just motion. It works flawlessly, detecting subtle breathing movements even when I am sitting still reading. The UART communication was easy to parse with my ESP32.

Reliable and compact
Small form factor makes it easy to hide behind fixtures. I've tested it against other brands, and the Xinkaida module offers comparable performance at a better price point. No issues with interference so far.

Great value, documentation could be better
The sensor itself is very accurate and ignores false triggers from pets or curtains moving. However, the initial setup guide was a bit sparse regarding the configuration registers. Once I figured out the baud rate settings, it has been rock solid.
Q: Can this sensor detect people through a thin wooden door?
A: Millimeter wave radar can penetrate non-metallic materials like wood, plastic, and glass to some extent. However, detection reliability decreases with material thickness and density. For best results, we recommend line-of-sight installation or mounting within the room being monitored.
Q: Is there a library available for Arduino or ESPHome?
A: Yes, the community has developed several libraries for ESPHome and Arduino that support the RD102 protocol. You can find example code in our GitHub repository linked in the product manual under the 'Resources' section.
Q: What is the maximum update rate for the detection data?
A: The default output refresh rate is configurable via UART commands, typically ranging from 100ms to 1000ms. For real-time applications, setting it to 200ms provides a good balance between responsiveness and data load.
Q: Can I adjust the sensitivity to ignore small pets?
A: Yes, the sensor features configurable sensitivity thresholds and blind zones via serial commands. By adjusting the minimum target size and filtering parameters, you can effectively reduce false alarms caused by small pets under 10kg.
Q: Does this module emit any harmful radiation?
A: No, the module operates in the 24GHz ISM band with very low power output (less than 200mW). It is fully compliant with international safety standards (FCC/CE) and is safe for continuous use in residential and commercial environments.
