Easy library support
Found plenty of open-source libraries for ESP32 and Raspberry Pi. The module arrived well-packaged and the pinout is clearly labeled. Getting distance readings took less than an hour from unboxing.

Good value for money
For the price, you cannot beat the performance. It handles ambient light well, which was a problem with my previous IR sensors. The only downside is the limited range, but that is expected for this specific model.

Reliable altitude hold
I integrated this into a micro drone for low-altitude holding. It performs much better than ultrasonic sensors in terms of consistency and beam angle. Highly recommended for indoor flight controllers.

Perfect for robotics projects
This sensor is incredibly accurate for short-range measurements. I used it on a small robot for obstacle avoidance and the response time is excellent. The I2C interface made integration with my Arduino very straightforward.

Compact and powerful
The form factor is tiny, making it perfect for wearable tech or compact devices. The data output is stable and noise-free. Definitely buying more for my next batch of prototypes.

Great precision, tricky voltage
The measurement precision is outstanding, exactly as advertised. However, note that it requires a specific voltage range around 2.8V, so you will need a regulator if you are running it off a 5V board. Once set up correctly, it works flawlessly.
Q: How does sunlight affect the performance?
A: The VL6180X has good ambient light immunity up to 100 kLux, but direct intense sunlight hitting the sensor may still interfere with measurements. It is best suited for indoor or shaded outdoor applications.
Q: Can this measure through glass?
A: Generally, no. Time-of-Flight sensors may measure the distance to the glass surface itself rather than the object behind it due to reflection. It is best used with a clear line of sight to the target.
Q: Is this module compatible with 5V logic levels directly?
A: No, the VL6180X operates at 2.8V. While the breakout board often includes a regulator, the I2C lines should be level-shifted if your microcontroller uses 5V logic to ensure safety and reliability.
Q: What is the maximum update rate for distance readings?
A: The sensor can typically provide readings at rates up to 100 Hz depending on your configuration and the integration time setting you choose in the register map.
