Essential for hydrogen fuel cell testing
Working with small-scale fuel cells requires constant monitoring. This module provides peace of mind. The LED indicator on the board is bright and clearly shows when the sensor is active or when gas is detected.

Great for learning embedded systems

Reliable alarm trigger

Perfect for my Arduino safety project
This sensor works exactly as described. I integrated it into a home lab ventilation system to detect hydrogen leaks during electrolysis experiments. The analog output is stable, and the digital threshold potentiometer makes calibration very easy.

Works well but gets hot
The sensor functions correctly and detects hydrogen reliably. However, the heating element gets quite hot to the touch, which is normal for this type of sensor but something to keep in mind for enclosure design. Ensure proper ventilation.

Good sensitivity, needs warm-up time
The detection capability is impressive for the price point. Just remember that like most metal oxide sensors, it needs about 2-3 minutes of warm-up time before readings stabilize. Once heated, it reacts quickly to hydrogen presence.
Q: What is the lifespan of the sensing element?
A: Under normal operating conditions, the sensing element typically lasts between 1 to 2 years. Continuous exposure to high concentrations of gas or silicone vapors may reduce its lifespan.
Q: Is the digital output adjustable?
A: Yes, there is a blue potentiometer on the back of the PCB. You can rotate it to adjust the sensitivity threshold for the digital output signal.
Q: Does this module come with a cable to connect to Raspberry Pi?
A: The module comes with header pins installed but does not include jumper wires. You will need standard Dupont jumper wires to connect it to a Raspberry Pi or Arduino.
Q: Can this sensor detect natural gas or methane?
A: No, the MQ-8 is specifically calibrated for hydrogen gas. For methane or natural gas, we recommend the MQ-4 or MQ-6 sensor modules.
Q: Can I use this outdoors in the rain?
A: No, this module is not waterproof or weatherproof. It should only be used indoors or inside a protective enclosure if used in outdoor environments.
