Excellent for obstacle detection
Using this for a robotics project to detect warm objects. The 32x24 resolution is sufficient for my needs and the refresh rate is fast enough for real-time processing.

Good sensor, requires calibration
The module arrived quickly and was well packaged. Out of the box, the readings were slightly off, but after running the calibration routine in the datasheet, it performs very well.

Steep learning curve
The hardware is fine, but getting the raw data into a usable thermal image took some effort. Would be nice if there were more beginner-friendly example codes included.

Perfect for low-res thermal projects
This sensor works exactly as described. The I2C communication is stable and the library support for Arduino and Raspberry Pi is excellent. Great value for a genuine Melexis part.

Genuine product
Verified the chip markings and performance against the official datasheet. This is definitely an original MLX90640. Highly recommended for professional prototypes.
Q: Is this compatible with 5V logic microcontrollers?
A: The sensor operates at 3.3V. If you are using a 5V microcontroller like a standard Arduino Uno, you must use a logic level shifter for the SDA and SCL lines to prevent damage.
Q: What is the maximum distance this can measure accurately?
A: Accuracy depends on the object size relative to the pixel field of view. For general human detection, it works well up to 3-5 meters, but precise temperature measurement requires the object to fill multiple pixels.
Q: Do you provide Python libraries for Raspberry Pi?
A: We do not host the libraries directly, but this sensor is fully supported by the official Melexis GitHub repository which includes Python drivers compatible with Raspberry Pi.
Q: Can I use this outdoors in the rain?
A: The TO-39 package itself is not waterproof. For outdoor use, you must house the sensor in an enclosure with an IR-transparent window (like Germanium or specific plastics) to protect it from moisture.
Q: Does this module come with a lens attached?
A: Yes, the MLX90640BAA model comes with a standard lens installed. Please ensure you select the correct suffix (AAB vs BAA) for your specific Field of View requirements.
