Good but requires processing power
The sensor itself is fine, but processing the raw data to create a usable image requires a decent amount of CPU power. If you are using a microcontroller like an Arduino Uno, you might struggle with the refresh rate. Works great on ESP32 though.

Perfect for DIY Thermal Projects
This sensor module works flawlessly with my Raspberry Pi setup. The resolution is low, as expected for this price point, but it's sufficient for detecting heat leaks and motion. The I2C communication is stable and the library support is excellent.

Great value, needs calibration
Good sensor for the price. Out of the box, the temperature readings were slightly off, but after running a simple two-point calibration routine, the accuracy improved significantly. Ideal for prototyping thermal cameras.

Reliable and easy to integrate
Used this for a smart home presence detection system. It distinguishes between humans and pets better than standard PIR sensors. The documentation from Melexis is comprehensive which made integration straightforward.

Exceeded expectations
I was skeptical about the 32x24 resolution, but for general thermal imaging tasks like checking circuit boards or finding drafts, it is more than enough. The frame rate is smooth and the data output is consistent.

Solid component for robotics
Integrated this into a small robot for obstacle avoidance based on heat signatures. It works well in low light conditions. The only downside is the narrow field of view compared to some higher-end models, but the cost benefit is huge.
Q: Does this require an external EEPROM?
A: No, the MLX90640 has the calibration data stored internally within the sensor chip itself, so no external EEPROM is needed for basic operation.
Q: Can this sensor detect body temperature accurately?
A: While it can detect human presence and relative heat, it is not certified as a medical device. For precise medical body temperature measurement, specialized clinical thermometers are required. This sensor is best for general industrial or hobbyist thermal imaging.
Q: What is the maximum distance this sensor can measure?
A: The effective distance depends on the size of the object. Since the resolution is 32x24, each pixel covers a relatively large area at a distance. For accurate spot measurement of a human-sized object, it works best within 3 to 5 meters.
Q: Does this module come with a lens attached?
A: Yes, the MLX90640BAA/B typically comes with a standard silicone lens pre-installed that provides the 55x35 degree field of view.
Q: Is there a Python library available for this sensor?
A: Yes, there are several open-source Python libraries available, particularly for Raspberry Pi and Linux-based systems, such as the Adafruit CircuitPython library for MLX90640.
