Great value, minor learning curve
The hardware quality is solid for the price. It took me a little while to understand the register settings for proximity vs. touch, but once configured, it detects fingers reliably even through thin plastic.

Seamless integration with ESP32
Connected this to an ESP32 immediately. The existing libraries support this chip perfectly. No noise issues even when placed near a WiFi antenna. A staple component for my sensor kits now.

Good board layout
The PCB design is clean, and the pinout is clearly labeled. I appreciated that it supports both 3.3V and 5V logic levels without needing a separate converter. One star off only because the headers were slightly loose on arrival.

Excellent sensitivity range
I was impressed by how far away it can detect a hand before actual contact. This feature allowed me to create a cool 'wake-on-approach' function for my display project. Very stable performance.

Perfect for DIY Keypads
This module works flawlessly with my Arduino project. The I2C interface makes wiring simple, and the sensitivity is easily adjustable through the library. Highly recommended for anyone building a custom control panel.

Reliable for student projects
We bought ten of these for our robotics club. They are robust and handle multiple simultaneous touches well. The documentation provided by Jiexingtai was sufficient to get started quickly.
Q: Is there a library available for Python on Raspberry Pi?
A: Yes, there are several open-source Python libraries available for Raspberry Pi that support the MPR121 chip. You can find them on GitHub or install via pip under packages like 'mpr121'.
Q: How many of these modules can I daisy-chain on one I2C bus?
A: The MPR121 allows you to configure different I2C addresses using the ADDR pin. You can typically connect up to 4 modules on a single I2C bus by setting unique addresses for each.
Q: Can I use this sensor to detect water levels?
A: While it is a capacitive sensor, it is specifically tuned for human touch and proximity. Using it for liquid level detection may yield inconsistent results and is not recommended by the manufacturer.
Q: Does this module come with the necessary pull-up resistors for I2C communication?
A: Yes, the board includes built-in pull-up resistors for the SDA and SCL lines, so you can connect it directly to your microcontroller without external components.
Q: What is the maximum distance for proximity detection?
A: The proximity detection range depends on the electrode size and sensitivity settings, but typically it ranges from a few millimeters up to approximately 3-5 centimeters in ideal conditions.
