Easy to use with Raspberry Pi
Connected easily to my Raspberry Pi 4 via GPIO pins. The Python scripts available online made reading the X, Y, Z axis data very straightforward. Would have given 5 stars if it came with a sample code sheet in the package.

Reliable replacement part

Perfect for my Arduino drone project
This sensor module worked flawlessly right out of the box. The I2C communication was stable, and I found plenty of libraries to get it running with my Arduino Uno within minutes. Great value for the price.

Great for learning embedded systems

Good accuracy after calibration
The raw data is decent, but like any magnetometer, it requires proper calibration to be useful as a compass. Once calibrated using the ellipsoid method, the heading accuracy improved significantly. Solid build quality.

Sensitive to nearby interference
The sensor works well, but it is extremely sensitive to magnetic interference from motors and batteries. You need to mount it far away from other electronics on your robot, which was a bit tricky for my compact design.
Q: Is there a difference between the HMC5883L and QMC5883P versions?
A: Functionally they are very similar for most hobbyist applications. The QMC5883P is often a pin-compatible alternative with slightly different internal register maps, but most modern libraries support both automatically.
Q: Does this module work with 5V logic levels directly?
A: Yes, the board includes a voltage regulator and level shifting, so it is safe to connect directly to 5V microcontrollers like the Arduino Uno.
Q: Can I use this underwater for an ROV project?
A: The module itself is not waterproof. You would need to encase it in a waterproof housing that does not contain ferromagnetic materials to avoid interfering with the magnetic field readings.
