Excellent for university projects
Bought this for our final year thesis on autonomous navigation. The PWM output is easy to read with standard microcontrollers. The magnet alignment guide in the documentation was very helpful for beginners.

Solid performance, good value
Compared to optical encoders, this magnetic solution is much more compact and resistant to dust. The only downside is that it is One-Time Programmable, so double-check your settings before burning them.

Fast shipping and great product

Great precision, tricky initial config
The accuracy is impressive once you get the programming sequence right. Reading the datasheet is essential before starting. The analog output is very stable, though I wish the voltage range supported 5V directly without a regulator.
Q: What is the maximum air gap allowed between the sensor and the magnet?
A: For optimal accuracy, we recommend an air gap of 0.5mm to 1.0mm. The sensor can function up to 2.0mm, but linearity and accuracy may decrease slightly at larger distances.
Q: Can this sensor be reprogrammed after the initial setup?
A: No, the AS5040 features OTP (One-Time Programmable) memory. Once the configuration bits are written, they cannot be changed. Please verify all parameters before programming.
Q: Is the included magnet suitable for high-temperature applications?
A: Yes, the included diametrically magnetized magnet is rated for the same operating temperature range as the sensor (-40°C to +125°C) and retains its magnetic properties within these limits.
Q: Does this module support daisy-chaining multiple sensors?
A: Yes, when using the SSI interface, multiple AS5040 devices can be daisy-chained to reduce the number of microcontroller pins required. Refer to the datasheet section 7.3 for wiring details.
Q: What microcontroller voltage levels are compatible with the IO pins?
A: The IO pins operate at 3.3V logic levels. If you are using a 5V microcontroller, you must use level shifters or a voltage divider to prevent damage to the sensor module.
