PCIe support is a game changer
Being able to attach a Coral TPU or an SSD directly via PCIe makes this module superior to previous generations for robotics applications. Boot speeds with eMMC are incredibly fast.

Great module, requires specific carrier
Excellent performance and form factor for embedded applications. Just remember you cannot use this standalone; you must design or buy a carrier board. The lack of included heatsink in some SKUs was a minor surprise.

Perfect for custom industrial projects
The CM4 is exactly what I needed for my custom carrier board design. The eMMC version ensures reliable boot times, and the PCIe lane allows me to connect a fast NVMe drive easily. Documentation is solid as always.

Good but expensive for hobbyists
The performance is great, but the total cost adds up quickly when you need to buy the official IO board or design your own. For simple learning, a standard Pi 4 might be more cost-effective.

Solid update to the CM3+
Significant upgrade in CPU and GPU performance compared to the CM3+. The dual HDMI output is useful for digital signage projects. Wish the Wi-Fi antenna connector was external by default on all variants.
Q: Does this module come with a heatsink attached?
A: No, the Compute Module 4 does not come with a pre-attached heatsink. Thermal management depends on the carrier board design and the specific application requirements.
Q: What is the maximum resolution supported on the dual displays?
A: The CM4 supports dual 4K displays at 30Hz or a single 4K display at 60Hz via its two micro-HDMI ports, provided your carrier board breaks out these connections correctly.
Q: Can I use a standard microSD card with this module?
A: It depends on the SKU. Models with eMMC storage do not support booting from an external microSD card unless the carrier board provides a specific SD slot wired for it, but the primary storage is internal. Lite versions without eMMC require external storage.
Q: How do I flash the OS onto the eMMC version?
A: You need to use the rpiboot utility on a host computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux) connected via the USB OTG port to mount the eMMC as a mass storage device, then write the image using standard tools like BalenaEtcher.
Q: Is the GPIO pinout compatible with Raspberry Pi 4 HATs?
A: The electrical signaling is compatible, but the physical form factor is different. You cannot plug a standard HAT directly onto the CM4; you must route the GPIO signals through your custom carrier board to a standard 40-pin header.
