Good quality for beginners
The brushes are surprisingly good for the price point. The ink stick takes some effort to grind, but that's part of the traditional experience. Would recommend buying extra paper as you will go through it quickly while practicing.

Perfect starter kit for my daughter
My daughter wanted to try calligraphy, and this set had everything she needed. The brushes are soft yet hold their shape well, and the inkstone is a nice heavy ceramic. Great value for the price.

Beautiful packaging and contents

Great gift idea
Bought this for my nephew who is interested in Asian art. He loves it. The only reason for 4 stars is that the inkstone is slightly smaller than I expected, but it works perfectly fine.

Soft bristles are fantastic

Excellent introduction to the Four Treasures
As someone new to Chinese calligraphy, I appreciated having all four treasures in one box. The instructions included were helpful for getting started with grinding the ink.
Q: Can these brushes be used for watercolor painting?
A: While primarily designed for calligraphy, the soft goat hair brushes can be used for light watercolor washes or sumi-e style painting. However, they are optimized for ink flow on rice paper.
Q: Is the ink liquid or do I need to grind it?
A: This set includes a solid ink stick. You will need to add a small amount of water to the inkstone and grind the stick to create liquid ink. This is the traditional method and helps control ink consistency.
Q: How many sheets of paper are included in the set?
A: The set comes with 20 sheets of practice rice paper. We recommend purchasing additional packs once you begin your regular practice routine.
Q: What is the best way to clean the brushes after use?
A: Rinse the brushes gently under lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Reshape the bristles with your fingers and let them air dry horizontally or hang them with the bristles facing down. Never leave them soaking in water.
