Solid performer for the price

We bought ten of these for our robotics club. Most worked flawlessly out of the box. One unit had a slightly loose pin, but we fixed it with some extra solder. For the cost, you really can't beat the performance for detecting combustible gases.

Reliable and sensitive

Good value, requires patience

The hardware quality is solid for the price. Just remember that it needs a long preheat time (about 24 hours) before the readings become stable. Once warmed up, it detects propane very quickly. Deducting one star only because the documentation could be more detailed.

Easy integration with ESP32

Q: Can this detect carbon monoxide (CO)?

A: The MQ-4 is specifically optimized for methane and combustible gases like LPG and propane. For Carbon Monoxide detection, we recommend the MQ-7 sensor module instead.

Q: What is the power consumption of this sensor?

A: The heating element consumes approximately 150mA at 5V during operation. Please ensure your microcontroller or power supply can handle this current draw.

Q: How do I calibrate the sensitivity threshold?

A: You can adjust the digital output threshold by turning the blue potentiometer on the board clockwise to increase sensitivity or counter-clockwise to decrease it while exposing the sensor to a test gas environment.

Q: Does this module come with header pins pre-soldered?

A: No, the module typically comes without header pins soldered to allow for flexible mounting options. You will need to solder your own headers or wires.

Q: Is this suitable for outdoor installation?

A: The PCB itself is not weatherproof. If installing outdoors, you must house the module in a breathable, weather-resistant enclosure that protects it from rain and direct moisture while allowing gas to enter.
