Good sensitivity, needs warm-up time
The sensor is quite sensitive to hydrogen gas. Just remember that it needs a significant warm-up period before readings stabilize. Once heated, it performs very well for industrial prototyping.

Solid performance
Integration with ESP32 was seamless. The voltage levels are compatible without needing extra logic shifters. My only minor complaint is the pin header spacing, but standard jumper wires fit fine.

Great value for money
I bought three of these for a university project. All three worked out of the box. The digital output threshold is easy to adjust, making it versatile for different alarm settings.

Perfect for my hydrogen leak detector project
This module works exactly as described. The analog output is smooth and responds quickly to hydrogen sources. I used it with an Arduino Uno and the calibration was straightforward using the onboard potentiometer.

Reliable for fuel cell monitoring
We are using this to monitor small leaks in a prototype fuel cell setup. It detects minute changes in concentration effectively. Highly recommended for R&D purposes.

Works but gets hot
The sensor functions correctly, but the heating element gets very hot during operation. Make sure your enclosure has proper ventilation. Otherwise, the data accuracy is good.
Q: Does this module require a separate library for Arduino?
A: No specific library is required. You can read the analog value using the standard analogRead() function and map it to ppm values based on your calibration curve.
Q: Can this detect natural gas or only hydrogen?
A: The MQ-8 is specifically tuned for hydrogen gas. While it may react slightly to other combustible gases, it is not calibrated for natural gas (methane). We recommend the MQ-5 or MQ-6 series for methane detection.
Q: What is the maximum current draw during heating?
A: During the preheating phase, the heater typically draws around 150mA to 200mA. Ensure your power supply can handle this load to avoid voltage drops affecting the sensor reading.
Q: How long does the sensor last under continuous operation?
A: Under normal operating conditions with stable voltage, the sensor life is generally over 2 years. However, exposure to extremely high concentrations of gas or silicon vapors can shorten its lifespan.
Q: Is the digital output TTL compatible?
A: Yes, the digital output (DO) is TTL compatible. It outputs a HIGH signal when gas is detected (based on the threshold set by the potentiometer) and LOW otherwise.
