Excellent for recording
I use the Soloist model for studio sessions. It cuts through the mix without being harsh. The projection is fantastic.

Reliable workhorse
I recommend these to all my advanced students. They are consistent from unit to unit, which is rare. Only wish the ligature was slightly better quality.

Great quality, stiff at first
Build quality is impeccable as expected from Selmer. It took about a week of breaking in before the resistance eased up, but now it plays beautifully.

Classic French Sound
The S80 C* is exactly what I needed for my concert band performances. The tone is warm, centered, and incredibly responsive across all registers.

Rich and Dark Tone
If you are looking for that traditional French classical sound, this is it. Very dark core with plenty of flexibility for vibrato.

Perfect upgrade for students
Upgraded from a generic mouthpiece to the S90 and the difference is night and day. Intonation is much easier to control now.
Q: What reed strength do you recommend for the S80 C*?
A: Most players find that a strength 2.5 or 3 reed pairs perfectly with the S80 C* facing, though this ultimately depends on your embouchure and playing style.
Q: What is the difference between the S80 and S90 models?
A: The S90 generally has a slightly larger chamber and a more open tip option compared to the S80, offering a bit more volume and brightness while retaining the classic Selmer warmth.
Q: Is this suitable for a beginner alto sax player?
A: Absolutely. The S80 C* is widely considered one of the best standard mouthpieces for students and professionals alike due to its ease of play and balanced response.
Q: Can I return this if the facing feels wrong for me?
A: Yes, provided the mouthpiece is unused and in original packaging with no reed marks, it can be returned within 30 days for a full refund.
Q: Does this mouthpiece come with a ligature?
A: Yes, all new Selmer Thinker Series mouthpieces include a standard metal ligature and a protective plastic cap.
