Great stone, slight color variation
The grinding experience is fantastic, producing rich, dark ink quickly. The only reason for 4 stars is that the color is slightly darker than the photos showed, though this is natural for stone products. Still very satisfied.

Perfect upgrade from my beginner stone
As someone moving from a synthetic stone to real Duan stone, the difference is night and day. The water retention allows me to pause my writing without the ink drying out. Worth every penny.

Exceptional quality for serious practitioners
This inkstone from Jiang Sixu Tang is truly remarkable. The Ma Zhi pit stone has a wonderful texture that grinds ink smoothly without being too abrasive. The snail patterns are distinct and beautiful. Highly recommended for daily practice.

Authentic Lao Keng quality
You can tell this is genuine old pit material. The sound when tapping it is crisp, and the texture is oily to the touch. Jiang Sixu Tang maintains high standards in their craftsmanship.

Smooth grinding, beautiful finish
I use this for both calligraphy and sumi-e painting. The ink comes out very fine and consistent. The natural shape fits well on my desk, and the craftsmanship is top-notch.
Q: Can this be used with liquid ink as well as ink sticks?
A: While designed primarily for grinding solid ink sticks to achieve the best texture, you can also use it as a palette for liquid ink. However, the full benefits of the Duan stone are realized when grinding.
Q: Are the patterns on every stone identical?
A: No, since this is a natural stone product, each inkstone has unique variations in the Luo Wen (snail) patterns and color tones. This uniqueness adds to the value and character of your piece.
Q: Does this inkstone come with a lid?
A: This specific model features an open design to showcase the natural Luo Wen patterns and does not include a separate lid, but it comes with a protective wooden storage box.
Q: How do I clean and maintain this Duan inkstone?
A: Simply rinse with clean water after each use and gently wipe with a soft cloth. Avoid using soap or detergents. Let it air dry naturally away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
Q: Is the stone heavy? I have limited desk space.
